The Unfinished Blanket
The Unfinished Blanket is a book about my much anticipated pregnancy which ended abruptly. It was discovered to be a rare and complicated twin molar pregnancy resulting in miscarriage, two very thorough dilation and curettage procedures, and months of bloodwork to ensure that the affected cells did not continue to grow and mutate into cancer.
This sculptural book takes the form of a crocheted baby’s blanket. It is a blanket begun with the hope and anticipation of a new baby, only to be discovered that it is no longer needed, pushed aside unfinished. Paired lines of text are printed onto three sets of pink satin ribbon ties. As the blanket is unfolded, the text describes the joy and excitement of a new pregnancy, followed by the worry of a possible complication, and finally the deep sadness at the loss of not just one baby, but of twins due to a molar pregnancy. A book printed onto silk is wrapped within the blanket and contains words taken directly from pathology reports of the post pregnancy procedures and lengthy testing that are endured with a heavy heart. The words don’t seem to make sense, but float on the page much the same way that confusing medical terminology and jargon seem to hang in the air without meaning when speaking with doctors during times of distress..
