Buried in Memory
Eight numbered cylindrical pine boxes contain hand felted wool rolled and bound with leather cord. Hand felted wool is used in this sculptural book work referencing the Burial in Woollen Acts 1666 – 1680 of the Parliament of England. Tied inside each roll of wool is a photograph of a staircase in the forest, a small photograph of a young man, and a handwritten memory all printed onto silk and stitched to the wool. The image of the young man progresses from a blurred shadowy portrait to flat gray as the boxes increase in number from 1 to 8. The memory held within each box also progresses from joyful to anxious to deep sadness and mourning. The memories and photographs are rolled in wool, tied up and laid to rest in a pine box. This book work is about paranoid schizophrenia and suicide.
Wall images accompany the work. 8x10 inch distressed image of a wooden staircase in the forest and 8 small images of a young man’s face progressively blurred to gray. These are the same images that are printed on silk stitched onto the rolled wool within each box.
