Sloth
Often thought of as laziness, Sloth is instead a decided inaction and purposeful withdrawal from personal or spiritual growth. It is apathy and complacency excused as not wishing to create conflict, being a people pleaser, or maintaining the status quo while choosing the path of least resistance sacrificing self, health, even happiness. Sloth is a willingness to remain in an unhealthy or stagnant situation with the assumption it will somehow better itself, or that others will take the action needed.
However, Sloth is not effortless in its purposeful withdrawal. It is driven by intention, a lack of performance that would bring with it change and, inevitably, improvement mentally, spiritually, or pathologically. The inactivity of Sloth, either as victim or perpetrator, often invites other Deadly Sins. Injustice to self or others most often occurs under Sloth’s watchful eye. Idle hands are the Devil’s playthings after all.
The effort into altering this book was only just enough. The cover remains intact with the revised title penciled on the front while the backside made a good coaster. The pages are stained linens that should have been laundered.
