Limerent Object

In this zine repeated whole and fractured images of a single crashing/crushing wave fill the pages alongside text that speaks to its limerent object in adoration that teeters on obsession. It quickly reveals a knowing sin of false idolatry and of creating the limerent object into something that they are not. Biblical subtext runs throughout, highlighting this sin by replacing the Lord with the limerent object in benediction [Numbers 6:24-26]; by fantasizing the limerent object’s voice as joyous as a heavenly angel’s at the end of days [Revelation 14:2]; and by the curse of carrying water as punishment for (self) deception [Joshua 9:27]. But, there is no response by the limerent object in the text, only the limerent’s proclamations. Do they go unheard? Or does the limerent object keep the limerent hanging on the ever hopeful hook?

The word limerence, seemingly the latest social media buzzword to be used incorrectly, doesn’t mean love or the excitement of an early crush. Limerence is an unhealthy obsessive attachment generally accompanied by a distorted sense of reality about the object of desire (the limerent object), wrapped up in a kind of worship and fantasy. There is perceived perfection by a limerent toward their limerent object and a willing or uncontrollable blindness to anything that doesn’t fit that created narrative. The experience of limerence is full of anxiety, highs and lows, in order to please the limerent object so that affection might be reciprocated.
